2 Old Ladies Golf in Scotland

Scotland is the birthplace of golf and we wanted to try our hand at our favourite game over there. Was it different? Was it harder? Easier? Were we good enough? Did we need to prove our handicap to get on the courses? Could 2 Old Girls travel with heavy golf clubs? So many questions. So we searched the internet, asked people we knew in Scotland … Continue reading 2 Old Ladies Golf in Scotland

Old Ladies Recharge in Saint Andrew’s By the Sea.

Having just spent the better part of two weeks with the Old Men, the Old Ladies felt it necessary to go on a mini-retreat to Saint Andrews By The Sea, a lovely little resort town in New Brunswick, Canada. Additional Old Ladies (and a younger one who will from here on be lumped in with the others) joined them.  Two vehicles disgorged six Old Ladies, … Continue reading Old Ladies Recharge in Saint Andrew’s By the Sea.

Irish Sheep

What is it that makes sheep so appealing?  As  children, we were introduced to them in nursery rhymes.  Later we were told to count them as a cure for insomnia. For a brief, misguided period in the 80’s, stuffed and tole painted sheep adorned at least one surface in everybody’s house. What were we thinking?! All these things came back to me while driving through … Continue reading Irish Sheep

Ardfert Village, Ireland…A Great Day Trip from the Dingle Peninsula

From our base in Dingle, we decided on a day trip to Ardfert, a small town just north of Tralee. It’s famous for its friary and cathedral ruins associated with Saint Brendan the Navigator. Our drive was almost exactly one hour. We chose the northern route, the Wild Atlantic Way, which has truly spectacular scenery. We scored a street parking spot outside the cathedral so … Continue reading Ardfert Village, Ireland…A Great Day Trip from the Dingle Peninsula

Three Old Ladies and a Husband….A short day trip around Dingle

After an exhausting day driving the Beara Peninsula, two of the old men decided to take in a hurling match in a town to the north. (See blog Old Men’s Hurling Outing)  The old ladies were more than happy to go on a short tour in the area around our VRBO organized by the non-sporting husband who had no interest in hurling.

Tip: When travelling in a group, allow time for individual interests.  Everyone does not have to do everything together every day.

Here’s what we saw:

Stop #1

20190522_152621

A small church beside a field of sheep.  We hopped out to peer in the windows only to find it had been converted to a home.  Imagine settling into a lovely converted church only to be terrorized by old ladies appearing at your windows all through tourist season.  To make it worse, others who saw us there assumed it was a must-see attraction and stopped as well. We did get a few good sheep pictures before setting off for ……

Stop #2 – Beach at Ballinrannig

20190519_075940

An absolutely gorgeous beach.  Perhaps in the summer, it is packed with people, but in mid-May, it was all ours. There was not another soul in sight.  We took a walk and picked up a few of the small purple rocks and sunhat shaped shells that littered the vast expanse of sand.  And then on to ……

Stop #3 – Brandon Creek

Here we found amazing scenery and a little history.  A cleft in the cliff wall  revealed water of the most beautiful shades of lapis and turquoise blue. A sign explained the placement of an interesting monument to Saint Brendon of Ireland.  According to legend, Saint Brendon set off from this very spot in 535 AD with 14 monks in a small wood and leather boat to take the gospel to uncharted lands in the west.  Now there’s a travel blog I’d like to read!  Signs in the area warned of dangerous waves in bad weather, but as it was a sunny day, we walked to the end of the wharf for a look into the caves before leaving for….

Stop #4 – Winestrand

Yes, I know, we already stopped at a beach, but this one was entirely different with masses of tall green and golden beach grass, craggy rocks and choppy waves.  Stunning.  Having worked up an appetite after all these stops, we headed for..

Stop #5 – Ballyferriter

…for lunch at the Ceann Sibeal Hotel and Bar.  Nice, albeit modern atmosphere and good beer. A perfect end to a local tour in Dingle.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten track a bit.  We loved the more advertised attractions in Dingle, but really enjoyed this relaxing putter around the area to the north. A perfect “down” day.

Old Ladies Travel with Old Men …..Dingle, Ireland 2019

Often, old ladies who travel leave behind old men who don’t.  Not permanently you understand, just long enough to miss them a little and have a few blissfully free days in the bargain.  In our case the old men are not entirely sorry to see us go, so it all works out. A few tips when leaving the men behind: Don’t go to the … Continue reading Old Ladies Travel with Old Men …..Dingle, Ireland 2019

Renting Your Car In The Republic of Ireland

Renting a car in Ireland is not for the faint of heart. Six of us were planning a trip and wanted two cars.  So the men began their research, each with their own style and favourite sources.  Notes were scribbled, conference calls were arranged, emails flew back and forth at a fierce rate.  In short, the old ladies were sure that there was more … Continue reading Renting Your Car In The Republic of Ireland

Queen Mary II then Scotland – 2017

Cruise Highlights It was a dream to take a Cunard cruise and this did not disappoint. My girlfriend and I wanted to go to Scotland to visit her family. This last minute cruise into Southhampton was almost as inexpensive as flying with the added bonus of 7 days of excellent food, accommodations, entertainment and, best of all, meeting some great people. At Cocktail Hour one … Continue reading Queen Mary II then Scotland – 2017

Copenhagen to New York…2017

We had an overnight flight via Iceland and arrived tired, hungry, disoriented and just plain out of sorts. I challenge anyone to arrive in Europe from North America fresh and delightful. We followed our Airbnb hosts instructions to the tee to get to Charlottenlund. The last bit was: turn left out of the train station and walk through the forest. Well, as Canadians, we were … Continue reading Copenhagen to New York…2017

Copenhagen September 2018

Arrival We were very excited to return to Copenhagen this fall. We visited for 3 days in September 2017 …pre cruise…and it was just long enough to “wet our whistle” and make us want to see more of the city and surrounding areas. We found that Icelandair flights out of Halifax through Iceland were perfect, with each leg under 4 hours. Of course, flying all … Continue reading Copenhagen September 2018
